INTERCOLONIAL.
The inquiry into the cause of the fire by which the Garden Palace was destroyed was concluded to.day. The verdict of the jury was to the effect that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated. A rider was added censuring the Government for the want of care exhibited hy the manner in which the valuable property, documents, &c., destroyed by the fire wore stored in the building. A daring bnt unsuccessful attempt was made at midday, on the 7th inst.. to break into the branch of the Commercial B ink of Australasia at Avenel. The manager was absent at the time, but an alarm was given, and one of the burglars was captured. The other, however, escaped, though he was chased for some miles through the bush. The police have effected the capture of the second of the two men who attempted to rob the Commercial Bank of Australia at Avenel on the 6th inst., and who escaped into the bush when his accomplice was arrested, The man was identified in the city to day and taken into custody.
