CROMWELL SPRING RACES.
The Cromwell Spring Meeting, in so far as tho sport, attendance, or weather was concerned. was no exception to the preceding two meetings, ami was an unqualified success, The stewards merit thanks for the manner in which they conducted the meeting, and for their kindly and hospitable treatment of visitors. The course, which is undoubtedly second tono-Uj •count y course in the province, was in splendid order, and the beautiful solo of green grass with which it was covered was a wonderful relief and a vast improvement on the olden days when the dust was inches deep. Tho totahsator, under the management of Messrs Solomon and Holmes, came in for a fair share of attention ; nearly 1.400 t olng recorded on it Mr. Lawrem e, the holder of the booth, apparently had no cause to complain of Lis venture, ho and Ids assistants being kept busily engaged. The Cromwell Brass Hand was in attendance, an 1 in the interval of tho races relieved the somewhat weary monotony by playing some lively airs The description af tin- racing is appended below. The start was a very good one, and made the most use of by Stake and Stockflower who took up the running and kept the lead till re cking tho half-mile post Here S ockflower came to the front and took first place with the greatest ease. Cromwell Ha-dicap, of 25 sovs. Distance, one mile and a half. J. Cowan’s b hj Rangatira, 10st 121b (Fraser) 1 C. M‘Kenna’s g g Haricot, aged, Bst 101b (Ward) 2 J. River's b g Resartus 3 yrs, Cat 121b (Rivers) 3 J. Cowan's b m Frances, aged Bst 2<b 0 A. M‘Kay’s ch g Horatio, 5 yrs, Bst 61b, 0 After several attempts the flag fell to an indiff. rent start, Haricot dwelling at the post. It was not long ere th :y were all on equal terms, Resartus and Frances slightly leading, Horatio following, with Rangatira and Haricot keeping well together behind. As the horses came round tho back of the course the order of things was changed ; Rangatha taking front place, Haricot and Resartus keeping o -rnpauy. Rangatira kept the position gained, and won by a couple of lengths, though coming up the Straight Ward and Rivers used spur and whip unsparingly. On totalisator, L 16 7; dividend, LI 17. Time, 2min. SOJsoo. Hack Selling Face, o! 10 sovs. Distance, three-quarter mile heats, No weight under Oat.
C. Dagg'a Ruby, aged _ (Barry) 0I 1 J..Wernor'B Darkle, aged (Richardson) 10 0 * Bungaro- and Jean starlgd, but were-no-where. Darkle won the first heat without an effort, and, had the riding been fair, he would have taken the o*her as easily The totalisator showed 63 on first heat; second heat, 8 ; third, 33. Largest dividend £2 6s. [At the .Cromwell Jockey Club meo'-ing on Saturday, it was conclusively proved that Darkie had been pulled. It was resolve Ito disqualify for ever Mr John Werner, owner of the said horse, and further that the horse Darkie he also disqualified from ever running on the Cromwell racecourse. It was also resolved ; That Hu. hj Richardson he disqualified from riding on the Cromwell Racecourse during the pleasure of the Club. Spuing Handicap, of 20 soys. Distance one mile and a half. J. River’s b g Resartus 3 yrs 6st 101b (Rivers) 1 J. Cowan’s bh Raugatira, aged, list 101b (Fraser) 2 C, M’Kenna’s e a Haricot, aged, Bst 51b (Ward) 3 J. Cowan's b f Stockflower, 3ya Sat 21b (M‘Kay) 0 Rivera’ Spectator and McKay’s Horatio were nominated for the Handicap, but did not accept. The start was a very good one, and taken advantage of by Resartus and Stockflower who took up the running and led up to the three-quarter mile post. Here Haricot began to tail off, Resartus still keeping first place. Coming round to the straight it became evident that Stockflower was played out. Rangatira was nearly 40 yards behind at the time, but when called upon came up in grand stylepthe distance between him and the leader being visibly lessoned at every bound. The excitement at the time was intense, the finish being one of the grandest spectacles ever witnessed on the Cromwell race course. On totalisator, LS7 ; dividend, L 6 10. Hospital Race. Distance, one mile. H. Tobin’s Gamecock (M’Laren) 1 £lO ilCs. was collected on the course Tobin’s Gamecock, Fe'tou's Geranium, and Mekay's Florence started. At first it looked as if Geranium was the best horse, but after passing the half-mile post, Gamecock came up and took the lead, winniu.’ by a nose. Consolation Handicap, of 10 sovs. Distance, three-quarters of a mile. J. Cowan’s b m Frances, aged, 9st 21b (M‘Kay) 1 J. M‘Kay’s oh g Horatio, 5 yrs. 7st 71b (Owner) 2 Both horses kept well together until reaching the straight, when Frances made an effort and came in a winner by a couple of lengths.
