SUPPOSED MURDER.

New Plymouth, August 20. The dead body found on the Opunake road about a mile from Stratford turns out to be that of a man named Knowles, a Tyrolese. He was last seen in the company of Antonio Schonell, who has been only a few months from a lunatic asylum, and who, it is supposed,has murdered Knowles, has the wound of a knife in its side. Schonell, who has been heard to threaten Knowles’s life as well as the lives of olhei persons is not to be found, bub the polict are making active search for him, as he is a dangerous man to he at large. The man who is supposed to have com mitted the murder has given himself up. Later. The Stratford correspondent to the Herald sends the following particulars of tke murder:—Two Tyrolese named Knowles and Antonio Schonell were up at Opunakyesterday to see about some bush-falling, and were seen returning about half a nub from -Stratford. Schonell was sen passing through the town alone on his way home t. Midhurst at past 1 o'clock. Mr Twigg. foreman for the Ngari Hoad Board on i«v up to the Opuuake road discovered Knowles’ body, stabbed iu the back and abdn men, and covered with blood. He was in a reclining pesitien 'against the bank at the side of the road, about five minutes walk nearer Stratford than where the men were last seen ’together. There/were signs of a severe struggle bovine taken place, the vie rim having evidently fought hard for bilife. Schonell was arrested at Midburst last night by Sergeant Cahill and Constable Tapp. When Tapp approached, Schonell exclaimed “ I suppose you have come to take me away for ’kilting that man.” Schonell this morning led the po’ioe to the spot where he had hidden a knife under a log close to the spot where the deed was committed. Schonell is supposed to bemad. He was in a lunatic asylum some time ago.
