ATTEMPTED MURDER OF ARCH-BISHOP GOOLD.
An attempt was made on August 21 on the life of the Boman Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne (Dr Goold) by a man named P.iA. O’Farrell, formerly practising as solicitor, and a brother of H. I. O’Farroll, who shot at the Duke of Edinburgh in Sydney in 1868. Archbishop Goold wss riding along the Brighton road near Melbourne on the ■evening of tire 21st inst, when O’Farrell fired two shots at him from a revolver from a distance of only two yards. One took ■effect, and wounded the Archbishop slightly in the finger. O’Farrell then made •off, but was captured after a long chase and some resistance. When his pursuers came sap with him he threatened to shoot them, hut was ultimately secured. O’Farrell has an equity snit against tie Archbishop, and recently applied for warrant against tbe lat ter for perjury. The application was, how•ever, refused. The news of the outrage considerable excitement here. - ;Earrell was brought up at tbe Police ' ■Court on the 22nd, and remanded till Fri•day next.
