On the very best authority we learn that there is no truth in the statement that the Government have promised a £2 to £1 subsidy for the rebuilding of the Beaumont and Roxburgh bridges. Friday, 18th August In the House of Bepresentatives to-day Mr. Driver gave notice that, on going into Committee of Supply, he would move ; 1. “That in the opion of this House it is impossible that one central Legislature and Administration can long manage the local affairs of the two I lands, and make annual appropriations in an equitable and satisfactory manner,” 2. “ That to maintain the federal unity of the Colony, and to secure economical administration and just legislation, it is absolutely necessary that there should be an immediate financial separation between the two Islands ” 3. “ That a respectful address be presented to his Excellency the Governor to the effect shat he may be pleased to appoint a Royal Commission to inquire into the financial position of the two Islands, having regard to the revenue and expenditure in the pas', and to recommend the terms upon which such financial adjustment may be fairly carried out; and that a bill, based upon such recommendation, be prepared during the recess and introduced within 14 days of the meeting of the next session of the present Parliament. Replying to Mr Levestam. The Hon. Mr Dick said it was true the Licensing Commission rs of St. Albans did g ant licenses to two public-houses to keep open till 11 o’clock. The permission Was not in accordance with the Actl but he did not think the police were the proper authorities to interfere. Replying to Mr Duncan. The Hon. Major Atkinson said Government did not intend to make provision for the payment of 12s. 6d. It is thoiivht, however, it will bo thrown out iu the Upper House.
