CRICKET.
THE AUSTRALIANS IN ENGLAND Lonpon, August 17. The Australian Cricketers commenced a match to-day against a United Eleven of South England, at Portsmouth. The weather was very fine, and there was a largo attendance of spectators during the day. The Homo team went first to the wickets, and were all disposed of for a total of 196 : the highest scorer being Mr C. F. Thornton, who made 45. The Australians then commenced their first innings, and at the close ot the day’s play had scored 27 for the loss of one wicket Blackham contributed 16, and is not out. August 18. The Australians, with one wicket down, continued their first innings, which closed for a total of 149. The highest scorers were: —Blackham, caught, 84 (?) ; Binneiman, Ibw, 26; and Horan, Bowled, 19. The bowling of the Englishmen was very destructive, and their fielding excellent. The Home team then commenced their second innings, and when the stumps were drawn for the day had scored 127 for the loss of six wickets. August 19. The match was resumed to day at Ports mouth. There was again a large attendance, and the weather was very fine. The Home team, with six wickets clown for 127, continued their second innings. The remaining four wickets fell for 25 and the innings thus closed for a total of 152. The Hon. A. Lyttehon was the highest scorer, with 51 runs. The Australians requiring 207 rims to win went in for second innings. None ot the batsmen, save Bannerman, Murdoch, and Bonnor, made any stand against the splendid bowling and fielding of the English*
men, and the mniuga closed for a total of 187. Tae Home team thus won by 20 runs In the second innings Bannermau was caught for 30, Murdoch caught for 43, and Boimor caught and bawled for 60. August 21. The Australian Cricketers commenced a match to-day against Eleven of the Somersetshire, at Taunton. The visitors went in first and scored rapidly, making 245 runs before they could be disposed of. The principal scorers were : —Bannerman (caught) 50, M'Donnell (bowled) 48, and Biaokham (not out) 43. After the usual adjournment, the Home team commenced their first innings, and when time was called had scored 86 for the loss of five wickets.
