Tuaprka Bats.— The Tuapeka County Council have struck a rate of Is. in the pound. Poisoned Deer.— By the report last meeting of the Acclimatization Society, we learn that a number of Axis deer on the property of Mr. Calcutt, of Goodwood, have been poisoned. Hospital Committee.— Members of the Hospital Committee are reminded that the adjourned meeting of the Committee of Management will be held on Monday evening next. Of the business to be transacted the most important is the election of Resi-dent-Surgeon, vice Dr. Foot. Collection of County Bates.- Mr. Clark, the County Clerk, notifies in another column, the dates on which he will attend at various centres in the southern ridings for the collection of rales. We understand he will visit the northern ridings immediately on his return from his present tour. Blacks’ Ploughing Match.—This year the Blacks’ district ploughing match is to be held at Ida Valley, on Friday, the 25th. inst. The paddock selected, we understand, is pretty well in the centre of the settlement, convenient to all alike. The programme, which is a very liberal one, appears in another column. New Manufactory in Clyde. -We are informed that Mr. Bell, the baker and confectioner of Clyde, is going into the wholesale manufacturing of biscuits and confectionary of all classes, he his having special machines for both branches of the business made, and expects to be in full swing and in a position to supply the trade in the course of a week or two. Sir Julius Vogel.- We (Malaura Ensign) are in a position to say that it is the intention of Sir Julius Vogel to leave Melbourne for New Zealand via the Bluff on the 22nd or 29th inst. Sir Julius has expressed a desire to see some of the New Z aland Agricultural Company’s properties, and, if his health will allow him, he intends visiting Gore and the Waimea Plains upon his arrival in the colony. Horrible Accident A frightful occurrence took place at Yclta (South Australia) af. w days ago. A young man named G-o. Dawson, aged seventeen, had a loaded iifl a in his hand, and was talking to one of his sisters, who was diesstd to go out. As he was answering a question his rifle expl ded, and the chage entered his sister’s breast. Death was instantaneous. An inquest was held, at which a verdict of “Arci'ental death” was returned. Dawson suffers great mental anguish, and it is feand he m y lose his reason. s Arson. A charge against Vr. McOilf, draper, of the Arcade, Dum din, of attempted arson on his premises is now- liein_- heard in Dunedin. The stock ef the accused has been valued at £1 §OO, and it was insured for £2of 0. A i eculiar fad has come out in the evidence, that the bo. ks of accused were removed from the. piemises, with his knowledge, on the night prior to the fire, though they were invariably kept on tbo premises. A Profound Joke, —On the recommittal of the Fisheries Bill in the House of Bepresentatives, on Tuesday last, Mr. Pyke, moved the following new clause:—"lf any person shall take any fish or oysters on any Sunday, Christmas Day, or Good Fridaj, he shall be liable for every such offence to a penality of not more than L 20.” The Daily Times Parliamentary correspondent says:-This is apparently one of the hon. member’s rather profound jokes. Valuable Sheep.—Mr. Duncan Sutherland has, the Oamaru Mail learns, already secured for use on the extensive stations of Messrs Dalgety and Co., in the Lindis dietrict, of which he is general manager, the greater portion of the flock rams bred by Mr. McMuster last year out of his Tokarahi stud flock. Mr. Gardiner, of T .pui, has also sold a considerable number ofyoung rams to Mr Sutherland. The Tcka-rahi and the Tapui flocks are of common origin both the Fisher strain. N. Z Bankruptcy Laws.— Mr. Weston, when discussing the Supreme Court Bill, referred to the question of the bankruptcy laws of New Zealand. He asked, How did ' they stand 7 Were they not a perfect scandal to the colony 7 Did they not offer every protection to the vagabond, and did they not frequently involve the honest man in ruin 7 What check had they imposed u| on the dishonest man 7 Absolutely none. He hoped that when hon. members came to the House this session they would be met with some proposals in the direction of amending the bankruptcy law, in accordance with a promise made by the Government c uring the previous year. Concert and Ball at Blacks’ On the evening of Friday, the 25 th. inst., a concert and ball will be held in the schonlhouse, ~ Ophir, in aid of the funds of the Dunstan District Hospital. If from the fact alone that the entertainment is for the benefit of that most estimable institution, the bospital, a large attendance should bo ensured. Ihe committee who have the management of the affair in their hands, are exerting .hemselvcs to Ihe utmost to make it a success, and we shall hope to see them well supported by a bumper house. D. J. C.—At a meeting of the subscribers, he’d at Dickie s Hotel on Monday evening last, it was final y decided to hold the on«uing race meeting on the old Dunstan race course, on Friday, September 29 ; but that the earliest possible steps be taken to select a new race course nearer the town of Clyde. It was also decided that the. amount of stakes he 165, and a sub-committee, consisting of three members, was appointed to y draw out the programme and have same advertised.
