Out of a total of 96, including four Maori members, who comprise the present House of Representatives, 74 voted on Mr Montgomery’s want of confidence motion, whilst eleven on each side paired. The question was virtually whether the House would agree to go into the English market this year for a fresh loan, or that the question be shelved till thenext session ; and the result, accordingly, was in favor of further borrowing to continue the Public Works. The Three Million Loan Bill was afterwards carried by 44 to 33, and the North Island Main Trunk Central Railway Loan Bill was, at a subsequent date, carried on a division of 45 against 23.
