Oamaru, July 18. i Richard Beattie was charged at the R.M. I. Court to-day with the murder of Sarah Adams. | Sergt-Major Thompson opened the case c at some lengtn, stating the facts as elicited s at the inepiest. Ho. stated that, so far as £ the police had been able to ascertain by a [ thorough inquiry, the woman bad had no c enemies, nor bad she any quarrel with any- ' one. He said the theory ho went upon was ' that when the accused went to his house on a the night of Saturday, June 10, he found t the deceased alive, because on the Saturday ' following he told a man named Gallie that | when he went home he found his clothes folded up and laid out for him, a (ire burn- f ing, and a piece of shirting which deceased j was making up for him lying on the table, J but that the deceased was away. Gallie f had therefore sail, “Why did you not i search in the hut for her?’’ and Beattie re- I plied, “It ili-l not occur to me.” The ac- J cused then went to Carrol’s bouse, and j thence to the Peebles Hotel. The theory r was that the accused murdered the deceased ( on the night of June 10, and that he got up, | left the hotel about the middle of night of \ June 11, and buried the body'. 1 A number of witnesses wore examined, 1 whose evidence was in the main the same as they gave at tile inquest at Peebles. The cise will probably last three days. The Court sits till ten to-night.
