INTERPROVINCIAL

Edward Shannon, a miner at Back Ore k. near Woodstock, while working in a tunnel was covered up ail Imt his head by some timber giving way. While his mate was endeavouring to extricate him, some tons of earth fell on Shannon, and when got out life was extinct. The deceased was 34 years of age, and leaves a wife but no family. It has been definitely ascertained that no serious damage has been done to the settlers at Gisborne by the late floods owing to the timely precautions taken,in removing stock. Messrs, Wylie, Bloomfield, and others have brought their stock hack. The greatest damage has been to the country roads and the Orai bridge, the latter being in a hopeless state. The rain has stopped, and the floods are now quite subsided.
