INTERPROVINCIAL

Upwards of 7000 people visited Christchurch by train from the country districts on Monday ; 15 000 travelled on the tramcars to and from the exhibition. The total estimated number of visitors to the exhibition yesterday was 24,000. All the places of amusement were crowded last night. Messrs Kelty and Co.’s large store, and offices, Waikaia, were destroyed hy fire at 3 o’clock on Monday morning. The fire is supposed to have originated from the bursting of a kerosene lamp, which had been left burning in the store. Very little of the stock or furniture was saved, and the flames spread so rapidly that the occupants of the dwelling-house, Mr and Mrs Kelty, four children, and a servant, barely had time to escape. The coachman and groom, who were sleeping in bedrooms off the office,

lost nearly all their clothing, etc. The insurances are : National Office £I9OO, Royal £590.
