CAMBRIANS.
(From our own CorrespondentJ April 3, 1882. The weather has hitherto been very favourable in this locality for harvesting operations. At present, however, it is foggy with occasional showers, which will inteifere with leading in. Generally speaking the crops are light, although not so poor as was expected in spring. Water for mining purposes is at present lower than it has been at any time during the summer, and iu consequence some of tlie claims aie working only about half time. Messrs Hughes anil Morgan, Vinegar Hill, have almost finished the tail-race which they have been constructing for the past 18 months. The channel in Shepherd JTut Flat is being pushed on as fast as the nature of the ground will allow. It i« three years since Ibis work was commenced, and it has been carried on uninteruptedly during that time. It will take at least one year more, perhaps longer, to complete the same, so readers can have some idea of the magnitude of the undertaking. A young man named James Hewitt, in the employment of Mr H. Mee, met with a serious accident about a week ago. It appears he was proceeding to a neighbouring farm with a dray, in which was a reaping machine. The horses took fright and bolted. In jumping out of the dray Hewitt’s foot became entangled in the reins, whereby he was thrown under the wheel which passed over him breaking one of his thighs. It was feared that ho had sustained some internal injuries also ; but fortunately this was not the ease. He was removed to the Naseby Hospital, where, according to information sent to bis friends by last mail, be is progressing as favourably as can be expected.
