It has transpired that ho has been borrowing largely of late from all sorts of people, and his liabilities amount to £BOOO or £IO,OOO. Ho was always looked upon as j articularly safe and reliable.

The charge against Mr Ivess of personation was beard on Friday last. The pro-

ceedings, were instituted at the instigation of the Registration Officer, the charge setting forth that the defendant affixed the name of one George James to a claim for registration on the Wakanui roll in November last without having authority in writing to do so, as stipulated by the Corrupt Practices Prevention Ait. James, in evidence, admitted having told Mr Ivesa to put him on the roll, and said (he could not swear whether he did or did not give him a written order. The Bench held that there was no case for a jury on this evidence, which was inconclusive, and dismissed the charge. The court was crowded during the hearing and the decision was received with loud applause, which was immediately suppressed. The authority which James gave Mrlvess, and which could not bo found in time for production at the hearing of the case, although defendant alleged he had it in his possession, has since been found.
