Robert Schoolfield was charged at the Auckland Police Court with riding in a railway carriage set apart for ladies. Tho magistrate, Mr M’Donald, ruled that anyone on the platform of a carriage could not ha said to ho in tho carriage, and dismissed the case. The decision caused some surprise. The Rodney (Hokitika) writ was received by tho Writs Clerk by the mail on Dec, 30. Tho delay will ho put right by Ordor-in-Council, aud the irregularity regarding the Waikouaiti writ will also be corrected in the same manner, but it is doubtful whether tho Act will enable tho Governor-in-Council to directa return for Hokitika under the circumstances,
The Now Zealand Shipping Oq.jiuvc received cable advices confirming the safe arrival of the ship Wtdpa at Loudon. Mr Stone, a gentleman of large experience in valuing diamonds on the South African goldfields,is now in Auckland, and offers information aud advice to miners seeking for precious stones hero, believing that the volcanic areas are probably diamond-bearing. Ho leaves for the Lakes aud the south shortly. A man named John Lawrie, while standing on the edge of a cliff to the north of Timaru, was precipitated to the rocks beneath through the earth giving way. He was seriously injured, and died shortly after his arrival at the hospital. The North Canterbury races were largely attended, and were very snceesful. Mason aud Valleuce’s Fleur de Lys won the two principal events.
A sad accident occurred at Master ton. A bookseller n’ined Chinehen took his nephew named Alf Bindcn to B<“e him fall a small tree. The tree fell on the boy, who in running for safety’, got in a most dangerous position. He is much brui-ed—it is supposed that his skull is fractured. There is uo hope of his recovery. Allen and Nelly, the two returning officers, who have been all this time in coming overland from Jackson’s Bay' and Okura allege that the Blue River, between Haast and Paiinga, was so Hooded that that they could not cross, and uo ferryman is stationed there. The Customs revenue collected at Timaru for the month of December amounted to L2lOl, showing an increase of over £4OO the corresponding month of last year. The returns for the December quarter also show a largo increase.
