A serious collision cccurod on T)ec Sth between three trains on tho North London railway, resulting in the loss of nine lives ami injuries of a more or less serious character to many of the passengers. A grand and impressive ceremony was performed on Dec. Stir at St. Peters, Rome, the occasion being the canonisation of four eminent deceased members of tho church of Rome. The rites of canonisation were performed by the Pope Leo, and the proceedings were marked with great splendour and brilliancy. His Holiness, whoso health has for a longtime past has been most unsatisfactory, continues in a very feeble state, and was only able with difficulty to take part in the day’s proceedings. A disastrous conflagration, accompanied with immense loss of life, occurred on Dec 9th in Vienna. During a performance at the Ring Theatre a lighted lamp fell on the stage’which-was at ouco ignited. The fire spread with great rapidity, and in a short time the flames had blocked all means of exit from the building, Sixty persons leaped from ',tho windows into extended articles of clothing held by others in the street below, and were saved. The majority of those in the Theatre were, however, unable to escape, and were burnt to death. Five-hundred (orpsos in all have now been extricated fnm the scene of the fire at the theatre, aixl it is feared that the total loss of life was fully 750. Intelligence is ;o hand from Tunis that the French troors have been everywhere successful over tie insurgents, a remnant of whom are nowonly left. These are retreating to tho rentier of Tripoli, and the French are in pursuit, A considerable force of Turkish troops has been despatched from Tripoli to r.lre frontier to protect it against tho retreiting rebels. Sir Samuel Wilson, the defeated candidate for Londonderry, threatens to petition against the election of Mr Porter, Q C.,the newly-appointed Solicitor-General for Ireland, on the ground that he used indirect means of bribery to rain the seat.

The British Govirnraent have invited 1,000 men of the aimy reserve or retired poiicemen to volunteer for-cpecial protection duty in Ireland as Irish police. A severe storm, aicompamed v.'ith heavy thunder and lightniig, was experienced in London on Dec. C, during which two persons wore struck by lighting and killed instan taneously. As the ship Parecra, bound for Auckland, "New Zealand, was in the English Downs, she was obliged to dip her anchors in order to avoid a collision wit hj another vessel, by which she was in tanger of being rundown. She was subsequently towed back to the Thames for fresh anchors. The owner of the tug has claimed £5,000 salvage money. Tim Pareora has since sailed again for Auckland. Mr Parnell, who is confined in Kilmaiuham Oil'd, is reported to be ill. The following important cable message appears in the Melbourne Ago, under dale London, 30th November:—“ Extraordinary excitement has been created bv the intelligence that the French general in command at Tunis lias causal to be shot MrLardner, the British consul at Tunis. The alleged cause for this outrage was that an attempt had been made to fire the French camp, and that Mr Lrrdner was suspected of coiupllclly. The matter is likely to cause grave complications between France and England.’ The later files of the Age contain no further news in reference to the matter.
