VINCENT COUNTY COUNCIL.
A special meeting of the Council was held in the County Offices, Clyde, on Saturday, at 2 pm. Present—Crs V. Pyke, Jo Jy, Co'clongh. Stronacd, Naylor, Pitches, and Macginnis. The business was to confirm (ho resolution passed at a special mee'ing held on the29rh day of September, ISSI “That the number of ridings in Vincent, County be reduced to eight ; and that for this purpose 'he Hidings ot Nevis an 1 E awanu be amalgamate- 1 -Hide- the name of Garrick hiding, and that the Council order thereon, and that one member of the Council be returned by and for caobri ling.” Crs Jolly and Ooleloiijh protested against the motion, in the first p'ace averring that, tne meeting was illegal, and secondly that the Council ha-1 no power to override the Act, as was the intent!- n of t e motion, inasmuch as if it was desirable that an alteration should lie made in the number of ridings or of connc Hors, such step should have be-n taken before the rolls for 'he present year were made up. as the rolls being once made up there was no power given in the Act to make new rolls in substitution then of. The Chairman refer-ed to an Order-in-C uincil of October 187S, giving the power to amend the rolls, and said as the order was made to reme ly a defect in the Act, and as it hail not been revoked it was a part o c the law of the land. There was not injustice i i the motion It had the effect of merely reproducin’ the true balance of non—r in the county, anil he lelt proud in supporting it. Crs Macgimii , and Pitches strongly supported the motion. During the debate, a. requisition, signed by 130 ratepayers of Kawarau Riding, protesting against the proposed change; also legal opinions by Mr Ifaggitt and Mr Harvey as to the legality of it, were laid on the table, and lead. The motion was eventually carried on division, Crs Colc'ough and Jolly on'y being against it. At a second special meeting, held on the Same afternoon, the corrected roll for the new riding was rea I and signed ; and Mr Win. Parsons was e’eeted returning officer fop the new Garrick Riding. Mr D ivi I Uro M ‘Gregor was also nominated to the office.
