FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENTS WELLINGTON, Thursday. It is officially reported hero that the elections of councillors for the various County Councils throughout the Colony will not take place till tho third Wednesday in November, in place of tho second Wednesday, in consequence of tho Prince of Wales' birthday falling on that day.
DUNEDIN, Thursday,
Mr Simpson, R.M. of Dunedin, has decided to resign his position in Dunedin. He will accept the management of tho Trustees and Executors Co.
Che case of Mayo v. Government, for damages caused through an accident at Kensington some months since, by which Mayo lost his life, was decided yesterday. Judgmeut was given for LSOO. There were four other cases, and the trial of this one settled the lot. The other damages aggregated LSOO.
Mr Pyko has received a numerously signed and influential requisition Dora the residents in Carrick Riding, asking him to i epi esent that riding at the coming election of county councillors. Should ho determine to stand he would be elected.
It is reported at New Plymouth that preparations are being made at the camp for a move of some kind.
Government are inviting members of volunteer corps to offer for active service, in the expectation that they may bo required in a few weeks at Parihaka.
A deputation yesterday waited on the Colonial Secretary in reference to thereleasing of pastoral land on sheep farms. It was urged that no time should be lost in giving sufficient information concerning it to the runholders and the public. Mr Dick concurred, and promised that the matter should be attended to at once.
Messrs Green and Cpton Davis are going to stand for Dunedin East.
The Arabs have been completely routed by the French troops at Tunis. Foxhall won the Cesarewiteh stakes.
Ihe mau steamer Brisbane struck on the reef about 30 miles from Port Darwin. The mails and passengers were landed, but the vessel still remains on the reef.
The embezzlement of LBOOO by two clerks in the employ of Kronheimer and Go., of Melbourne, has been discovered. The books had been falsified by the clerks, who have absconded.
