At the Resident Magistrate’s Court Wellington, William Poppens, proprietor of the Princess Theatre Hotel, was charged with Sunday trading, and fined L 5. Two previous convictions were recorded against him.
At a meeting of the Wellington Ladies’ Land League, it was announced that LI 30 bad been collected, and this amount will ho forwarded to Miss Parnell by the outgoing mail.
On Monday a silver salver and purse (containing 800 sovereigns) was presented to Mr John Ollivier on behalf of a number of admirers throughout the province. The Hon. John Hall made presentation. Mr J. C. Firth, Matamata (near Auckland) hasten acres laid down in sorghum, which he intends to manufacture into sugar. At the Catholic Church, Dunedin, on Sunday, the young men of the congregation were enjoined to put their names on the roll. Two tons of oatmeal and LIOO has been sent from Dunedin to the relief of the Shetland people. The “Daily Times’” Wellington correspondent sends cheering nows with regard to the last six mouth’s revenue. The Custom# oxcood the estimate hy L 40,000.
