THE OAMARU FIEND
OAMARU, August 30. Charles Augustus, who was remanded from last Tuesday till to-day, was brought up for sentence for assault on his wife. His Worship (Mr I. N. Watt) said :—“ Last Tuesday, the 23rd inst., when 1 was about to sum up evidence and pass sentence, you stopped me, and wished me to remand the prisoner for a week, in order that he should be retained hero instead of being forwarded to Dunedin, to make arrangements for the disposal of some little property that he had hero, and to provide support for his two children. I did so, and in the interim the case has in some material points—unintentionally, no doubt—perhaps I might say somewhat in ignorance of the subject—been misreported. Articles have been written on it which have attracted the attention of Parliament, and an application for inquiry has been made. I have been called upon to report fully on the subject, and I shall send to Wellington to-morrow a copy of the depositions and my summing up. In the meantime I shall leave the matter where it is by remanding the accused again to Wednesday, September 7.”
