RAILWAY ACCIDENT.

MELBOURNE, August 30.

A serious accident occurred this morning on the ■‘'elbourne and Hawthorn railway, near .ont. A lire of one of the wheels brok while the train was proceeding between Richmond and Joliraont, when the engine and all the carriages left the rails at the station-gates at the latter place. Some of the carriages capsized, and several of the passengers were injured, some of them very seriously. Later intelligence from the scene of the accident at Jolimont shows that four persons have been killed—viz., Mr Garratt, Baptist minister, of Brighton ; Mr Jameson, a law clerk; Mr Balliere, the well-known publisher ; and a laborer, whose name is not known. Messrs Bliss and Lyons, both auctioneers, are seriously injured. Those only slightly injured are—Major Geach ; MrFosbery, of the Crown Law Office; Messrs W. Elmslie, Stephen, Renwick, and several others.

The 1 - 20 p.m. train which met with the accident this morning at Jolimont was the express from Brighton to Melbourne. The disaster occurred at 9 a.m. When the train ran off the line, three carriages were hurled over the embankment into the swamp. One first-class carriage was smashed to pieces, and the other two were overturned. Three passengers were extricated dead from the first-class carriage. The scene at the place of the disaster was most distressing, and great excitement prevails throughout the city and the suburbs over the occurrence. Traffic on the lino is entirely suspended. T ie following additional names of injured pissengers have transpired Ed. Wright a id Edwards. 9 30 p.m. It is stated that Stephens, who was very seriously injured at the accident, died this evening. It has transpired that the deceased gentleman was a relative of Judge Stephens All the other injured persona are progressing favorably

11 P.M, The report of Stephens’ death has been contradicted. He is still alive, but no hopes are entertained of his recovery. The total number of persons injured is 20.
