INHUMAN TREATMENT OF A WIFE.
OAMARU, August 18. A case of brutal treatment of a wife has just come to light here. On the 3rd instant an unfortunate woman named Isabella Augustus, wife of a Swede known as Charles Augustus, a laborer, was confined. Five days afterwards the brute sought to gratify his animal propensities, a proceeding which was resisted by his wife. Thereupon Chas. Augustus ill-treated her for several days, refusing to permit her to call in a doctor,or to allow her any assistance. This fiendish conduct, coupled with threats upon her life, was continued until Tuesday last, when her case became known, and she was removed to the hospital. It was then found that she was in a critical condition. An information was at once sworn against Augustus, who was afterwards arrested on a charge of assault. Later. The poor woman has since died from the injuries received. Augustus has been tried and was remanded till last Tuesday. On that day he was charged with manslaughter and again remanded for a week.
