SPECIAL TELEGRAMS
From our Special Correspondents. WELLINGTON, August 10. The following telegram has boon received by the Premier from the Mayor of Cromwell “ The proposals re distribution of seats were considered, and it is felt to be essential that the Upper Clutha Valley, Wanaka, and Hawea should be included with Cromwell and Bannockburn, whether in Wakatipu or any other electorate. A division of tho district by the Clutha River would sever people whose social and political interests are identical.” The Premier has also received the following despatch “ Manuherikia, August 8. An informal meeting re re-distribution of seats was held on Saturday night, between 11 and 12 o’clock. The motion carried is strongly objected to by a majority of the inhabitants.— John McKbrsey.” The telegram published in the “ N.Z. Times ” is from the same source. The following appears in that paper today : —“ With regard to a telegram we published yesterday from a Manuherikia correspondent, stating that a meeting had been instigated by Mr Pyke’s friends, to protest against the Government proposals re the Distribution of Seats Bill, and that the majority of the Manuherikia, Blacks, and Tinkers residents were in favor of the Government proposals, we have been shown by Mr Pyke copies of correspondence sent to the Mayor of Alexandra, and other influential people, protesting strongly against the Bill. Meetings have been held throughout the district, notably at Ophir (the centre of Blacks) and Alexandra, emphatically protesting against the re-distribution as proposed. So far as we can gather, public opinion in the Dunstan district seems that way, and it is now also evident that the telegram we published yesterday was for a purpose, and a questionable one.” The Dunstan district has been restored with altered boundaries. Cromwell and the Upper Clutha Valley are thrown into the Wakatipu, as urged in Mr Colclough’s telegram. The new district is from Leaning Rock Creek to Beaumont, including Blacks and Tinkers, also Tapanui township. Population, 4,682. DUNEDIN, August 11.
