BRITISH AND FOREIGN LONDON, July 20, In the House of Commons to-day the postponed clauses of the Irish Land Bill were passed through Committee after debate, and the Bill was reported to the House with amendments, the third reading bein'' fixed for the next sitting. In the course of to-day’s sitting the appointments to the Irish Land Commission were approved by the House of Commons without opposition. Telegrams are to hand from Tunis announcing that numerous desertions are taking place from the Tunisian army owing to the strong feeling among the Bey’s troops of sympathy with the rising of the Arab tribes. July 21. A strong movement is being made to organise a public banquet to the members of the Cabinet as an expression of gratitude for the liberal policy of the Government. The “ Daily News ” to-day publishes a telegram from Lahore, announcing that Ayoub Khan’s troops have inflicted a defeat upon the Ameer’s troops at Candahar. July 22. It having definitely transpired that the report that the sentence of death passed upon Midbat I’asha for complicity in the murder of Abdul Aziz had been commuted to banishment to Arabia, was incorrect, and that the death sentence is to ho carried out, the British Government has sent a communication to their Ambassador at Constantinople, instructing him to intercede with the Porte on behalf of Midhat, and to urge commutation of the sentence of death.
In the action Clarke v. Bradlaugh, to recover penalties from the latter for sitting in the House of Commons without first taking tlie oath, a verdict has now been returned for tho plaintiff.
July 23. A telegram to hand from Cuba announcing that two employees of tho Bank at Matangisas have embezzled 200, OOOdol ,and have succeeded in effecting their escape with tho money. July 24. Six infernal machines, concealed in barrels of cement which formed part of tho cargo of the ship Malta, recently arrived at Liverpool from America, were discovered to-day. On examination they were found to contain charges of dynamite. The police are instituting inquiries, but have not up to present time been able to trace tho owners. July 25. In the House of Commons to-day a question was put to the Home Secretary as regarded the reported seizure of infernal machines, which had been brought from America to Liver pool among tho cargo of the ship Malta. Replying, Sir W. Vernon Harcourt confirmed the report, and said that the machines had been confiscated by the authorities at Liverpool.
