LONDON, July 6. Latest reports say that President Garfield is decidedly improving. Intelligence to hand from Artatown, in Epirus, states that the Turkish troops who had evacuated that city preparatory to its surrender to the Greeks here, re entered the place and are raising fresh obstacles to its cession. The settlement of the Greek frontier question is still further delayed. Telegrams to hand from Tunis, announcing that the' French war ships are now bombarding the seaport of Sfax whore the rising of Arabs recently occurred. Latest. In consequence of the Turkish troops reoccupring Artatown, a large force of Greek troops is being despatched to the district. They crossed the frontier, and are rapidly advancing towards their destination. Intelligence to hand from Caudahar says that serous differences have arisen between the officers of the Ameer’s troops stationed at Oandahar and Girisk. The dissension was apparent for some time past, but its now daily increasing and creating disunion in the ranks of the Ameers army.
DUNEDIN, July 7. At the Land Board yesterday the application of Vfr Worthington, of Queenstown, to exchange a piece of ground was referred to the Chief .Surveyor. Francis O’Meara’s application to exchange lease in raid-Wakatipu district was granted. Application for agricultural leases were gr anted to Messrs Morrison and Ashley, Shotover. The Colonial Treasurer made his Financial Statement last night. The Statement was well received. It propnsed increasing the county rating powers to 2s. It showed that reductions had been made in the Civil Service during the year of L 334,000, and this item was received with applause. The property tax, the Treasurer said, did not drive away capital, or prevent capital coming into the country. There was no necessity to impose fresh taxation, anil some reductions were proposed. A scheme was proposed of an experimental kind for raising loans in New Zealand, to commence with L 250.000. The net public debt on March 31st was L 27,000,000. The Statement was very able and exhaustive, and occupied one hour and twenty minutes in delivery. A telegram was received from London stating that the sum divisib'e amongst assured in the New Zealand Government Life Assurance Department for the quinquennial period amounts to L 50.000.
The Gaming and Lotteries Bill was read a third time an 1 passed in the Legislative Assembly yesterday. The resignation of Mr Berry and his colleagues was received yesterday, and Sir B. O’Loghlen has been summoned to form a Ministry, and has accepted the task. The Queensland Parliament was opened by the Governor yesterday. A Chinaman who carried small-pox from a countryman who was attacked at Waterloo, Sydney, has been suffering from the, disease, and has beeu removed to the Quarantine Station.
To-day Moritzon was sentenced to twelve months imprisoiiment fur embezziog money of Standard Insurance Co. The Crown Prosecutor remarked that it was impossible to obtain convictions by Dunedin juries for embezzlement, even in the face of conclusive evidence A criminal information was heard at the Police Court to-day against T. Allen, seeds man and City Councillor, at the instance of the Town Clerk for libel. Accused was committed for trial. Government have received information from Agent-General, to the effect that intelligence as to the amount of revenue for year ending March 31, including statement that railway profits represented 31 per cent on outlay, was received with great satisfaction, ami is likely to have good-effect ou .New Zealand stock. ■ .
