At Auckland, on the 28th ultimo, a quarantined passenger on board tho outward mail steamer, died of dysentry. By tho explosion of a kerosine lamp, the residence of of Mr Jago, at Nelson was, a few days since totally destroyed. The loss is covered by insurance. The heaviest sea that has been experienced for years at Oamaru, rolled into the bay T on the 28th ultimo. The breakwater is supposed not to bo injured, but numbers of laborers’ tenements, built close to tho beach, were washed away or destroyed. An exciting scene occurred during mass in the Parsontown Roman Catholic Chapel. The officiating priest was referring to the doings of the Land League and other local occurrences, when tho commanding officer of the troops from Birr Garrison stood up and, in a loud tone, ordered his men to withdraw. Great confusion ensued ; women fainted, and a general rush was made for the doors. The soldiers obeyed their commander, and were marched off to the barracks, followed by an immense crowd, hooting and groaning.
