BRITISH AND FOREIGN. London, June 16th. The “ Daily News ” to-day publishes a paragraph stating that the English Government h.issent a communication to the Unite! S’ates Government, calling attention-to the present nature and extent of the Fenian movement in England, and requesting that steps miiy'fie taken to prevent the operations of the Fenians in America. Telegrams are to hand from Panama reporting that there is consideiable .discontent and consequent disorganisation among the employees on the canal works, and that the same are thereby being seriously impeded. June 17. Recent intelligence from Ireland reports that disorder in that country has somewhat abated, rioting between the peasantry and police having greatly subsided. The authorities, however, continue to take steps to prohibit all assemblies of people on occasions of sales, and at scenes of eviction of tenants. News has been received that an accident has happened to a boat of H.M.S. Monarch, turret ship, one of the Mediterranean squadron, while at torpedo practice. One officer was killed and several seamen severe'v wounded.
An extraordinary disturbance occurred at Marseilles on the 17th instant. Several re (aments of French troops just returning m Tunis were marching through the -own, and on passing a building occupied by an Italian Club they were hissed from the window by some of the members. There was a large number of people on the street at the time, and the action of the Italians greatly incensed them. They angrily demanded that the Italian escutcheon should be removed from the Club, and a great scene of disorder ensued. The Prefect arrived on the scene and endeavored to calm the moh, protesting against any violence, The escutcheon, however, was pulled down and order restored,
Juno 18. The total quantity, of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 1,990,000 quarters. The Bight Rev. Edward M’Cabe, Roman Catholic Archbishop of Dublin, has issued a pastoral letter to the Bishops and Clergy ef Ins diocese, urging the adoption of a moderate policy by the people, and impressing upon them the necessity of abstaining from acts of violence.
Further disturbances hauc taken place at Marseiles between citizens and Italian residents. Another detachment of troops from Tunis were insulted and maltreated by the Italians. The townspeople retaliated, and many were killed and wounded before order could bo restored. At St. Petersburg, amino was discovered tc-day. Juno 20. In the House of Commons to-day, Mr Gladstone confirmed the announcement, that representarions had been made to the United States Government on the subject of the operations of tho Fenians in England snd America.
The following are special telegrams to Melbourne papers : * brutal outrage has been perpetrated in Galway. A magistrate who had given offence to the Land League by the performance of his judicial duties was savagely attacked by a band of miscreants, seriously maltreated, and left half murdered. Great indignation has been caused from its being known that the magistrate had applied to the Government to protect him in the discharge of hia duties, and had been refused.
Favorable accounts are published ns to the state of the English wheat crop At St. Petersburg, a fresh plot lias been discovered to assassinate the Czar. His coronation, in consequence, has been postponed. A daring attempt has been made to rescue the prisoners M'Grathand Kerett, who confined in Liverpool gaol on the charge of attempting to blow up the Liverpool Town Hall with dynamite. The warders had previously received the alarm, and when the mob assembled in front of the prison the warders made their appearance armed. The would-be rescuers, numbering about 300, finding that preparations had been made to resist an attack, retired. The military have since been called on to guard the prison. Mr Timothy ; Healy, M.P. for Wexford, one of the rnnstyouthfu land extreme members of the Home Rule party, in the course of a bombastic speech, bitterly denounced Mr Forster, the Chie* Secretary for Ireland, as an oppressor of the Irish people, and challenged him to mortal combat; the duel to be fought with swords This proposal has excited general amusement, especially as Mr Forster is well-known to be a member of the Society of Friends.
