For a vacant clerkship in the Auckland City Council lately, there were eighty applications. At Wellington, it is understood that no alteration of portfolios nor the appointment of a successor to Mr Oliver will be made until Mr Hall returns.
The funeral of the late Captain Garrard took place at Christchurch on the 21st instant. It was of a private character, only relatives and a few others attending. A Commission of enquiry has been appointed in Wellington to enquire into the working of the Stamp Act, with a view to prevent fraud. Charters, late manager cf the Sydenham Building Society, near Christchurch absconded to England with L 2250, of which LI2OO will be recovered.
The Christchurch Jockey Club intend building a grand stand, &c., before Spring, at a cost of four thousand pounds. At Adelaide, the the St. Leger was won by Progress.
