At Sydney, on the 28th ultimo, an influential meeting was held to discuss the present influx of Chinese. It was resolved to send a deputation to the Cove r mnent to urge the necessity for repressive measures against Chinese immigration. The captain and owner of the steamer India ,alias Ferret, which was lately seized by the Melbourne authorities for sailing under false register, has been arrested. In his possession were found arms and a log book criminating the vessel, and at his hotel 626 sovereigns, and bills to the value of L 7500 were found by the police. On the night of the 30th ultimo the office of the Auckland City Council was robbed. The treasurer’s safe was opened, and 120 in notes and gold taken. A cashbox with cheques to the amount of L3l was found in the adjoining yard. Police have been despatched to the scene of the wreck of the Tararua. The Melbourne exhibition was closed on the 30th ultimo. The total admissions were 1,485.000. The Captain of the steamship India (at Melbourne) has been brought up under a charge of sailing under a false register, and remanded.
