London, April B. It now transpires that the conflict on the Tunisian agrarian frontier has not (as previously reported) occurred over the former difficulty between England and France as to the disputed right af an English subject to the estate at Eufida, hut has arisen in consequence of action on the part of France towards the acquisition of Tunis. April 7, News has been received that an earthquake has occurred iu the island of Ohio. 5000 persons lost their lives. April 6. A serious disturbance occurred at Ballinamore(lreland), to-day, between the police and the people. The latter were fired on by the police, and a girl who was in the crowd was shot dead. April 7. The detached squadron, which includes the Bacchante(on whicharetwo, sons of the Prince of Wales), is ordered to proceed to Melbourne. The Earl of Beacousfieldis iu a very critical state. In the House of Commons to-day, a Bill introduced by the Government for the amendment of the Irish Land Laws was laid on the table, and read a first time. A Commission will be appointed to make grants to facilitate emigration, to assist tenants to purchase their holdings, and to buy land from the landowners who are willing to sell. It will be optional with landlords and tenants to evoke the aid of the Courts. It is intended that the Act shall be partially retrospective. April 8. The Earl of Beaconsfield is still in a critical state. The Oxford and Cambridge University boat race took place to-day, and was won by Oxford. The Earl of Argyle has resigned his position as Lord Privy Seal iu the Ministry, and is succeeded by Lord Carlingford. Sir Michael Hicks-Beach has given notice in the House of Commons of a motion censuring the Government for its settlement of the Transvaal difficulty. The Ambassadors in the TuikoGrecian dispute have sent a circular note to the Hellenic Government peremptorily ratifying as final the do cision that it has been determined that the extended Greek frontier shall alone consist of the province of Thessaly with the strip of emmtry in the south of Epirus including the town of Prevesa on the northern shore of the Gulf of Arta. Total quantity of wheat afloat for Groat Britain is 2,430,000 quarters. April 11. The Earl of Beaconsfield is making progress towards recovery. Paris, April 8. Telegrams have been received from Algiers announcing that 10,000 troops despatched from France in view of the difficulty in Tunis, have been landed at Bona, a seaport on the Algerian coast near the Tunisian frontier. April 9. Diplomatic correspondence continues between the French and Italian Governments on the Tunisian question, and it has transpired that the French Government in their last communication disavowed any intention to annex Tunis, but firmly insist that French influence shall preponderate in the Principality. London, April 11.
The Bey of Tunis has formally protested against the French violation of his territory, and has appealed to the Great Powers for protection. Kousakoff, the assassin of the late O, iv, and his accomplices have been sentenced to death.
