AGRICULTURAL SHOW.
Judges: For Cattle—Messrs Stronaoh, Welsford, ami Handisido. Horses — Messrs J. Spratt, H. Tohill, and J. Packman. Cereals, &c.—Messrs Stronaoh and Jones The first agricultural Show ever held in the Dunstau District took place on Thins day, March 17th, at Blacks, under the auspioes of the “ Blacks District Farmers’ Club,” and, with but little fear of contradiction, wo may pronounce it to have been a success, It is true that the number of exhibits was not large, and in some instances the classes were not represented ; but these defects, if they may bo so termed, were due more to the shortness of time given to prepare stock than that fair representatives of each class could not he found. The exhibits shown evidence that the aim of the fanners is beyond the mere growing of oats and potatoes, and as shows of this character have a more direct tendency than any other means that can be devised in imbuing the public mmd with the fact that it is more profitable to keep good cattle iustead of worthless ones, wa hope the “Blacks Farmers’ Club” will take heart from the success of their first show and arrange for othera.to follow. They must, however, bear in mind a longer notice is required to prepare exhibts. We shall not attempt to enter into a detailed description of the exhibts. Wc cannot refrain, however, from alluding to a few of them. Messrs Murphy 8r05.,-of Spottis Hundred, showed some pretty cows; also a first-class Shorthorn bull, for which they were deservedly awarded first prizes. Mr A. A. Oliver, of “ The Elms,” Dunstan Flat, also showed a two-year-old and a yearling Ayrshire bull; he also had on the ground some bull calves. For the yearling he took a first prize ; the two-year-old was disqualified, ho being a few months beyond the stipulated age. The yearling and the calves were, after the show, submitted by auction, and were sold at Ll2 and L 5 each respectively, the latter falling to Mr. W. Leask, of Blacks, who showed well in many classes, his draught stock and cows claiming attention and prizes. Of entire horses, there was not much competition, there being only three Clydesdales and one thoroughbred, Mr Harrington’s Young Ben Lomond taking the judge’s eye for first prize, as against Turner’s Foung Reformer and T. Mee’s Royal Duke in the heavy draught class. Howard’s Young Morris Dancer is a nice little horse, and carried first prize, he being the only one of the c aas shown ; but we think had Roebuck, Amba, oi some others that have visited the district, put in an appearance, he would not have occupied the premier position. Of pigs, there was positively no show. Whether it was known than Mr Walker’s slips were to put in an appearance; or again, whether that profitable branch of farming is so much neglected in the district that there are really no pigs to show, we cannot say. The fact, however, remains. In this class there was no show, but we hope to say differently on the next meeting. Of grain, there were some very creditable samples shown, Bald-hill Flat coming well to the fore, but there were not enough of them. The ladies had some good samples of butter, any one of which we considered first-class. Wc shall refrain from further remarks. The customary dinner took place at Gavan’s Shamrock Hotel, in the evening, Mr J. Stronach (president of the club) in the chair; Mr J. E. Jones occupying the vice-chair. The chairman, in the course of remarks made by him, referred in most feeling terms to the loss the club had sustained in the death of Mr Robert M’Morran, the late president. Mr. Jones, the vice-chairman, gave some good practical advice to farmers as to the proper treatment of the ground if good crops were to be expected. After a pleasant evening had been spent, the company broke up, fully pleased with the day’s proceedings.
