♦ BRITISH AND FOREIGN. (From Exchanges.) London, November 30th. The Lana League agitation in Ireland continues to receive considerable support in many parts, and numbers of new members are being enrolled. At Kildysart alone during the last few days over 1000 persons have joined the League. Laycock and Hanlan have now agree 1 to pull a match for the championship of the world and LdOO asHe, The race will take place on the Thames, on the 17th January next. J m. ~ . December Ist. The Marquis of Salisbury addressed a large audience at Woodstock, Oxfordshire, last night. In the course of his speech his Lordship referred at length to the address of Earl Granville at Hanley on the previous day, vvh»n the latter announced the intentions of the Government in regard to Ire- ’ land.. Alluding to the proposed Land Bill, he said the Tories would oppose any measure ■which would lead Ito the confication of the property of the landlords, and ho ridiculed
the idea of creating a peasant proprietary in Ireland. Referring to Earl Granville’s announcement that the Government would introduce a Rill dealing with the present disorder, and providing for the future happiness of irishmen, his Lordship strongly urged the necessity of first repressing the existing anarchy before lairing steps to remedy the grievances of the people. The Government heve decided to abolish the positions of Lord Chief Baron of the Exchequer and Lord Chief Justice of Common Pleas. December 2nd. Additional bodies of marines have been ordered to Ireland, the importation of arms being still on the increase. England has made a proposal to the other Powers not to disperse the combined fleet, and maintains that they should continue to act in concert to execute the remainder of the treaty. Mr Parnell, on account of the meeting of Parliament, has applied for a postponement of the tiial of the Land Leaguers. It is proposed to send American lawyers to Dublin to defend their cases. Outrages in Ireland are still on the increase. December 4th. The county of Leitrim. Ireland, has been gazetted a disturbed district. The combine I fleet has dispersed, and the British portion proceeded to Malta. Ross, the American oarsman, won the match against Trickett bv three lengths. The application of Mr Parnell for postponing the trial of the Lind Leaguers has been refused by the Irish Judges. Large withdrawals of gold are being made from the Bank of England for America.
