EXECUTION OF NED KELLY.
Ned Kelly was hanged on the 11th inst. in Melbourne Gaol After several unsuccessful appeals for clemency, be made a final appeal that bis body should be given up to his relations, but this was refuse i as being contrary to the regulations. His throe sisters paid him a. farewell visit on the night of the 10.b, and an affecting scene ensued. Kelly retired to bed at half past one o'clock in the morning, and was restless for an hour. He then slopt until live o’clock, when he arose and prayed for 00 minutes, and then lay, down ag iln. He was visited shortly afterwards by tho Revs Dean Lonely and Shea, who ministered spiritual consolation and remained with him till the last. They wor.M not allow him breakfast. Just before nine o’clock the irons were knocked off, and Kelly was conducted to tho condemned cell. He walked jauntily Horn his former cell, and had to pass through tho governor’s garden, whom he exclaimed “ Ob, what a pretty garden.” He remained in the cell engaged in prayer with the priests, I and precisely at ten o'clock the governor of the Gaol and the Sheriff went to the door, and a warder announced tbs fatal moment had arrived. The priests, one bearing a'tall crucifix and intoning the prayers, preceded the prisoner, who exhibited some signs of faltering, but.made great efforts to hold up. The gallows were | situated opposite the cell door, the drop being 74 feet. Kelly,' in coming out, ex- ! claimed “ Ah, well, it’s come to this at last.” He gave one look at those present , b'neath, and iben cat his c\cs down and’ s'epped on to the fatal spot, where the noose was adjusted arid the wliite cap was i pulled over his face. The bolt was then ■ drawn, death being instantaneous. Only a few twitellings were perceptible, and there was no atrugg ing. The body was cut ; down at half past ten, and the inquest was I held at twelve o’clock, '
