CRICKET.
The opening match of the season—between the Cromwell and Clyde Clubs—was played on the ground of the latter on Saturday last. The day was a real cricketing day, aud a very good wicket had been prepared. The loss of the house which did duty for a scorer’s booth and pavilion, which was destroyed in a recent gale, was very much felt, as during the afternoon the sun was very oppressive to the spectators. Both teams wore on the ground in good time, aud Mr Rees having won the toss sent the visitors to the wickets, Tobin and Arnold being the representatives. Williams and Aria opened the bowling, and considering the very little practice which either side had had, the cricket displayed was very good. Evidently the Cromwell men went in determined to kill the bowling, in which they succeeded, notwithstanding that the howling was good. When the partnership between Tobin and Arnold was dissolved Loudon came in, and the same good defence was kept up and runs came more freely. Tobin (9), Arnold' (7), Loudon (41 not out), and Howell (ill) were the chief scorers. The innings closed for 101. This score mmll have been considerably reduced but for Loudon being misse l two or three times early in his innings, and also to the indifferent fielding of the Clyde team, who. however, had no; practise 1 together on a single occasion during this season. After an adjournment for balfan-liour, V* illiams and Jones took the wickets on Lelia)f of Clyde. Tizard and Tobin opened wiili tiie ball. Jones played most carefully for Ids 9, while Williams hit freely ami fa-t for his 13. Jones was unfortunately given out 1 1> w, when he was well sot, and this doubtless influenced the result of the match. Aria (18) was the only other who got into double figures, and the innings closed for 72. APer an interval of a few minutes, Arnold and Loudon went to the wickets to represent Cromwell. Arnold (.‘1.3) and Loudon (23) were howled, Tobin (S) 1 b w, and Turtou was not out for 2S, the total when the stumps were drawn being 10G. The Cromwell team thus won t ln> match on the first innings by 29 runs. TLu following are the scores
