The railway employes at Auckland have resolved as a first step towards obtaining equitable treatment to petition the Commissioner of Railways for the North Island to bo placed on aln equal scale of pay with the Southern men.
The Toon Clerk of Wellington has written to the Chief Commissioner of Police calling on him to institute an inquiry into the alleged ill treatment of a prisoner by two constables.
The Sydney Evening News has been fined L2snfor contempt cf Court. Arrangements have necli almost completed at Christchurch with regard to the cheap trip to the Melbourne Exhibition. The steamer Hero has been selected, and she accommodates lot) excursionists. The route will tie Lyttelton to Wellington, thence to Sydney (staying three days), thence to Melbourne (six days), back to Sydney and on to Auckland (two days), thence to Lyttelton. The fare* including hoard and residence,- will be eleven gdineas. An Auckland telegram states that one O. William King has been committed for trial on a charge of selling arms to the Natives. At Wellington, on the 27th ultimo, John Watson was committed for trial, for attempted suicide.
Tue Golden Fleece Company's (Roefton) six weeks crushing yielded 105G ounces of gold. No cine has been discovered in the matter of the late robbery of jewellery from Government house, Melbourne.
On the 25th ultimo, the police made a discovery of forged back notes at Fitzroy, near Melbourne. The notes forged were ini the Bank of Victoria, and numbered over 2i)l!0 Tue forger, who gave the name of 11. Stewart, says that, bo has no accomplices. The stefamfship Scrota is now being dismantled, and will shortly bo handed over to the Receiver of wrecks. Nearly L 20,000 has been expended in trying to float her.
