In view of the position financially the County authorities are placed in by the withdrawal of subsidies and proportion of land fund, it is incumbent that every economy should be observed, and the pruning knife applied in every possible direction—that is if any useful works are to he carried out. The officers doubtless will be the first to be tackled, in fact that is provided fur by Cr. Cololough’s notice of motion. To so astute a mind as that of Cr. Colclough, it should however have been clear the taking of a hundred pounds or so from the salaries would not save the County ship from being wrecked. But perhaps Cr. Colclough had not the courage to go deeper, and tackle another question that affects not alone four individuals but the entire public. However t.hat may be, there is a luxury Vincent County is indulging in that it cannot affird, and let whom bo affected, it must be lessened. We allude to the free punts—there are under the Comity control four of these institutions, costing at the very lowest LIOOO per year, and W'e think we should not he far wrong in saying LISOO, adding cost of maintenance to that of attendance. This amount would he saved by a small fee for horses and vehicles, leaving foot traffic free, and we unhesitatingly say, more especially as tolls have been again imposed on the roa Is down the country, that fees should be rcimposed.
