The Catholic High School. Christchurch, is to be opened on September 20th by Bishop Moran. Water is very scarce at the Temora rush, sixpence per bucket being the price, and a very limited supply. The N.S W. Government have no intention to abolish the mint, as the losses are diminishing, and it keeps up the price of gold to the diggers. A new and valuable discovery of copper lias been made twenty miles north-east of Burra, Queensland. At Timaru, O’Connor recently walked a mile in Gmin SSseo. It is said to be the fastest time in the Australasian colonies. Dunedin Tattersall’s now numbers over 60 members.
An Adelaide telegram of the 9th instant states that the Sorata’s position is Unaltered, but the captain is hopeful of being able to float her after pumping her out. An invitation has been issued for a conference of representatives of the various Colonies on the Chinese question during the Melbourne Exhibition.
Lambing is now far advanced in the Napier district, and promises a large increase. At Grahamstown, on the 10th instant, a boy named Syms, ten years of ago, being thirsty, went into a cordial maker’s place, took up a jug containing oil of vitriol, and drank a quantity of it. He was taken to the hospital, Where strong alkalies were administered, but it is doubtful if ho will survive.
At Christchurch, on the sth instant, two men went out shooting. One shot was fired and a hen pheasant killed. They had to pay L 9 6s for the shot and somebody else ate the pheasant. The Pacific Mail Company have reduced the fare through to England to LC7. At Auckland, on the llth instant, Smith the landlord of the Occidental Hotel, was fined H0 for permitting gambling in his hotel.
Sir Hercules Robinson arrived at Sydney on the 13th instant.
Heavy rains have fallen in Melbourne and Geelong—portions of both cities are flooded.
The steam-ship Sorata is in a very critical position, owing to the gale which is blowing.
On the 12th instant, the body of a young man was found in the harbor at Wellington. At the inquest, held the following day, it was ascertained that his name was Hunt.
Following up his action of last year, Mill. C. Bain, M. H. R , has divided the half (LSI) of his honorarium equally between the Invercargill Hospital and the Southland Benevolent Institution. A delegate from Yorkshire Farmers has arrived at Wellington. The publicans at Oamaru who were summoned by the police {or selling watered brandy, resulted in several of them being fined, and in the other cases the charges were dismissed, on account of the publicans admitting to the constable who purchased the liquor that it was diluted. On Saturday morning last the 11th instant, a cottage situate near the Lunatic Asylum at Christchurch, oocupiel by Mr R. Winson, an attendant at the Asylum, was destroyed by tiro, and two children, aged six and throe years respectively, were burnt to death.
The latest news with respect to the steam shio .So rat a is to the effect that she has not suffered by the late gale. Active pumping continues, and the water in her hold is diminbhbig.
_ Mrs Greer was refused a passage on the Chimborazo, her friends have arranged for a passage to England by a sailing vessel.
