STOCK REPORT.
Mr Donald Stronach (on behalf of the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports as follows for the week ending September Ist•
Fat Cattle. —135 head of cattle were yarded at Burnside to-day, of which 100 were fat, the remainder, being stores. The supply being only moderate, the trade demand was fair, ami prices realised show a slight advance on those of last week. Fat bullocks fetched L 0 15s to Ll2 2s Cd : and cows L 5 10s to LS 10s per head. The stores sold L 3 17s Cd per head. Wo quote prime beef 2Cs, and medium 22s Cd per lOOlbs.
Fat Sheep were in full supply, 2748 head having been offered, of which 2078 were oross-breds, and 070 merinos. Biddings wore languid, ami values declined fully Is to Is 0d per head. The cross-lncds sold at from 10 s to IGs, and the merinos at from 7s 6.1 to 10s C.l per head. Wo sold 250 head on account of the New Zealand Agricultural Company at 12s 9d and also other lots at full rates. Quotation for prime mutton, 2,yl per lb.
Fat Lambs.—3o were sold at from 9s to 13s per head. Fat Figs.—99 head realised from 24s to L 3 12s Cd per head. Grain.—Wheat: Market very quiet, hut there is no reason to reduce quotations for prime samples, of which the supply is small. Inquiry for inferior descriptions ami for fowls’ feed is very slack. We quote prime milling, 4s Gd ; medium, 3s 01 to 4s 2d per l bushel. Oats : Demand for local consumption is very limited, tiro level of holders’ expectations being at present unattainable, j There is some inquiry for shipment, hut wo do not hear of much business. Prime milling may bo quote 1 up to Is SI ; good feed, Is 0,1 to Is 7.1 pir bushel. Barley ;
Really prime malting samples would com- I maml fully 3a 01, but supply of such descriptions is very limited. Ordinary to good we quote at 2s 01 to Os per bushel, with a sluggish demand. Wool —The daily reports which have reached us by te'egram of the progress of the auctions in London, continue on the whole favourable, the demand being more animated, and the Homo trade operating freely. Cross-bred descriptions have not yet recovered, however, from the decline established at the opening of the series. Sheepskins,— A t our weakly public rail on Monday, prices showed a sensible improvement on those of previous week, and with a satisfactory demand we cleared a fair catalogue at following quotations : Butchers’ cross-bred skins, 3s G1 to 5s 3 I ; merinos, 3s to 4s Gd ; sta’i in skins up to 4s each ; skins in bales, 4Jd to 5j 1 per lb. Hides.—We have placed several consignments at recent quotations, say 3*l per lb, for wet salted, and 20s each for butchers' green hides, and the demand continues good.
Tallow —Market fanly supported at late rates. 27s per cwt. could be obtained for well-rendered tallow, and 15s to 17s for rough fat.
Some people are remarkably careless of their money. Recently a man named Little, was brought np before the Central Police Court, Sydney, charged with drunkenness. It transpired that Little had been found helplessly drunk the previous evening by constable Ayscough, who conveyed him to the station. On being searched, LI 09 was found on him. Little said ho ought to have more money, and the constable went back to the spot where he arrested him and found a bundle containing L2SG. The speed now attained by some of the Clyde steamers surpasses anything hitherto recorded- The Buteman (a Rothesay paper) says that the Lord of the Isles has accomplished the wonderful feat of running at the rate of twenty-three miles an hour. Several times her speed was tested with a similar result.
