BRITISH AND FOREIGN. (From Exchanges.) London. August 17. American wheat harvest prospects are favorable. The harvest is estimated at 500,000,000 bushels. Calcutta, August I7th. Intelligence has been received from Af ghanistan that a large body of Pathens attacked the British garrison at Kachmadan, hut were repulsed and pursued, and a severe loss inflicted on them. Further information to hand states that Ayoub Khan is now engaged bombarding Candahar, and the British forces are acting on the defensive. Lon’do.v, August 18th. In the House of Commons to day Mr W. E. Forster, Chief Secretary for Ireland, denounced the wickedness and cowardice shown by Mr Dillon in his seditious speech at Kildare, but said he had no intention of prosecuting him.

The wool sales opened with prices of from a halfpenny to a penny lower than the last sales. On the following day 10,600 bales were offered, the tone of the market showing a better demand, and prices were firmly maintained.

August 20th. Preparations are being made for numerous land agitation meetings to be hid throughout Ireland on Sunday next. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,000,000 quarters. Berlin, August 19th. Serious storms and floods in Prussia have caused Great damage, and to a large extent destroyed the growing crops. Calcutta, August 19th. A report comes to hand that Ayoub Khan sent a strong force to attack the Sherpur gate of the citadel at Candahar, and heavy firing between the British troops and the enemy Was maintained from morning to evening. The British loss is said to have been trilling.
