HAWEA NEW RUSH.

This field is maintaining its own d< spite the croakings and assertions that it was only a patch. On receipt of latest accounts, which came to hand during this week, we learn there are about two hundred men on the ground, and of whom about one hundred and fifty are on gold and making equal to ordinary wages and in some instances more. The gold is of a coarse character, and accordingly patchy. There is now p’euty of accommodation on the ground, and plenty of stores ; people accordingly need have no fear of being inconvenienced for the want of either food or shelter. The weather of late during the nights has been rather cold, but from earlymorning to dusk it is beautiful sunshine. The prevailing opinion now is that the gold will not be confined to Long Valley, but that it will be found on the Wanaka as well as the Hawea falls of the range, also up the Hunter Valley. This by all accounts is a most magnificent valley, some sixty miles in length, heading right from the main dividing range, and though while bearing every outward indication of being auriferous has never been prospected ; ami falls into Lake Hawea. The Makarora Valley', which falls into Lake Wanaka, is also likely looking. People who therefore do pay the district a visit have more than one field for prospecting. One great advantage in the district is the timber suitable for all purposes which abounds at the head of the lakes, and which is to be had at reasonable rates, there being saw-mills in the locality.
