It is whispered (says an English paper) that the Irish famine, of which we have heard so much, is and has been from the beginning a gigantic imposture. That very severe distress has existed in particular districts of Ireland is undoubted ; but the great famine of the sensation telegraphists aud the illustrated papers is, we are told, more or less mythical. It seems that, if wo are correctly informed, au unconscious conspiracy has been going on to exaggrate this distress; benevolent peeresses and National journalists viewing with one another in what to the latter has long been the congenial task of magnifying the woes of Ireland.
