Mr Donald Stronach (on behalf of the New Z aland Loan and Mercantile Agency Company, Limited) reports as follows for the week ending 4th August : Fat Cattle. —l7l head were yarded at Burnside to-day, consisting chiefly of good to really prime quality. The demand was sufficient to dear off the supply at some improvement on last week’s rates. Bullocks fetched from 1-8 to L! 3 2s 6d, and cows from 1,11 pe- head. We sold on account of Messrs Smith and Dorn well the first draft of magnificent well-bred cows and heifers from the celebrated herd of Messrs Fleming and Hedley, Scadown Estate, at from L94sto LI 1 per head. Quotations : For prime beef, 25s to 27s Gd, and medium 22s Cl lOO'.b. Privately we have placed G2U head. ' ■ Fat Calves.—Five head were sold at 27s each.
Fat Sheep.—The Supply consisted of 2328 head, of which 350 were merinos and 2178 eross-breds, principally good qualpy. The former sold at from 9s 91 to 12s 9.1, and the latter at from 13s 91 to ICs 31 per head. Inconsequence of the full supply at last week’s market, butchers had not cleared off stocks, aud the demand was not brisk at scarcely pea ious rates. We sold 140 bead of cross-breds on account of Mr J. C. Gilchrist at 16s Quotation forprime mutton barely 2JI peril). Sheepskins.—We had a full catalogue at our weekly sale on Monday, which met with good competition, and was cleared at prices showing some improvement on those of previous week. Quotations realised were : For butchers’ cross-bred skins, 2s 7d to os Id ; merinos, 3s 31 to 3s lOd ; station and full-wolled skins, 2s Id to os each ; skins in bales, 7-1 per lb; pelts, 91 cadi. Hides.—We report further sales at prices previously quoted, viz., 20s each for butchers’ green hides aud 3Jd per lb for wet-salted ; but there are indications that these rates will not be supported in future transactions.
Tallow.—Demand continues fair at about last week’s quotations, at which we have made sales—say 25s to 27s per cut. for well-rendered tallow, and I6s to IBa for rough fat.
Grain.—Wheat : The market is decidedly firmer for good descriptions, and sales have been made up to 4s Gd for very prime milling. Other descriptions have not as yet participated fully in the improvement, but supplies being very limited the prospect is favourable. We quote as follows-:—Prime milling, 4s 31 to 4s 6d ; medium, 3s Sd to 4a ; fowls’ feed, 2a 9d to 3s 3d per bushel. Oats: Holders continue firm for higher rates but as buyers are indisposed to give prices demanded there is but little doing. In the absence of business wo cannot quote above la G-l for prime milling aud Is 4d to Is 5d for feed. Barley :We report sales of medium quality malting at from 2s Gd to 3s per bushel, Probably 3s 3J or 3s Gd might be obtained for any parcels of prime maltigg, although demand is very limited.
