THE GATLING GUN
The firm of Sir W. Armstrong and Co., of Newcastle-on-Tyne, has, with the assistance of the inventor, Dr. Galling, greatly improved this useful weapon. The new gun has ten barrels, each 18 inches long, and each having its corresponding lock. The barrels and locks revolve together, are loaded and fired automatically. The appearance of the gun is that of a brass howitzer, 27 inches in length and 6J inches mean diameter. The rapidity of tire has been more than doubled, and the gnu can be fired at the extraordinary rate of on; thousand rounds per minute, but the ordinary rate of firing is about 700 rounds per minute. Fired at a target 19 feet long by 11 feat high, at a range of 1001) yards, it scored 9iis hits out of 1000 shots, insome recent trials.
