BRITISH AND FOREIGN. (From Exchanges.) London. June 14th. C donel Gordon, having faded to obtain permission to go to China, has tendered the ipsiunation of his position in tho British s-rv : oe. It is said that Turkey considei s the dec;s:on of the European Conference as not binding, because she has been excluded from the agreement which was expected to be general among members of the Conference.

The demands of the Government, it is announced, are to be referre I to the Special Commission to be despatched by the Berlin Conference to settle the Turco Greek frontier question on the spot. June 20th. Extensive military preparations are going on and the Greek army is being increased, with the view of enforcing their claims. London, June 19:b.

The following messages have appeared in the Melbourne papers : London, June 10th. A disastrous fire brake out in Pennsylvania. One of the largest petroleum houses in tint State caught tire, and a fierce and disastrous conflagration soon raged. It is estimated that not less than a million of barrels of oil were destroyed, of the value of nearly a million dollars. All efforts to cheek the progress ot the tiro failed. The catastrophe created great consternation among the inhabitants. A later despatch says that it is roughly said 2,000,000d01. worth of property avas destroyed.

The Spanish man-of-war despatched by the authorities at Madrid to quell the revolutionary insurrection at Cuba has arrived. The man-of-war found an American schooner there under circumstances that led to the suspicion that those in charge were in communication with the rebels. The man-of-war took possession of the schooner and burnt her. Allotment letters have boon issued to the subscribers for shares in the South Australian Land and Mortgage Company, which is to be formed with a capital ot L 1,000,000.

A dreadful accident is reported to have occurred on hoard a Spanish man-of-war lying off Santiago de Cuba. Whilst getting up steam, one of the boilers hurst, and caused great destruction to the ship. There wore no Jess than 140 casualties. Many of the crew were killed instantaneously, and numbers injured seriously. The distress in Mayo demands immediate relief. The marriage of the Princess Frederica of Hanover to Baron Von Pawel-Raraingen was solemnised at Windsor on the 24th ult. The Queen was present at the ceremony.

The report as to the intended marriage of Prince Leopold with a lady of high distinction in private life is considered very probable.

The London correspondent of the Pan's Temps reports the following as the substance of a declaration made by Earl Granville at the first official reception, relative to the Foreign Policy of the Government: —The Treaty of Berlin to be maintained, the Cabinet will not enter into a Continental alliance, and the relations with Franco will be cordially continued. Regarding tho demands of Greece, the Cabinet give them support, exceeding even the demands put forward by the French dip’omatists. The representatives ot the Great Powers appointed to a conference have held several m ectings of a preliminary character. It is

understood that a complete understanding will he come to at an early date as to the s‘eps to be taken for the settlement of the vii ions questions submitted, and for insulin,.' upon an early compliance by Turkey with the demands of the Powers.
