A. telegram of the 2nd instant from Melbourne states that a party of police which left Benalla the day previously had arrived at Beech worth, but had seen nothing of the Kellys. The Bank of Sydney at Jaiiin li has been robbed by four armed men, who were masked. The manager of the Bank was engaged feeding his horses at II p.m , when he was bailed up and compelled to open the safe, from which L4BB in gold was taken. The manager's wife and sister were covered by revolvers while the money was being taken. The clerk was absent on leave, and the police were engaged on country duty.

E. Laycock, the well known Sydney oarsman, has gone to England. It is stated that he is desirous of meeting Hanlon, the Canadian.

The Auckland Steamship Company report that from experience gained on the voyage of the Southern Cross to Leruka, they are confident that if the New Zealand Government assist them by a subsidy of L 2500 per annnm there would be an increase of trade and passenger traffic greatly to the benefit of the Colony, On the 3rd instant, at Christchurch, a young woman named Jane Matthews was arrested on a charge of infanticide, in connection with the body of the infant fonnd la the river the other day.

| In the Sydney Legislative Assembly, on the 3rd instant, M r Coonan brought forward charges tantamount to the implication of acts of .corruption against Judge Meymott. Ministers promised that a commission should be appointed to inquire into the matter.

Sydney telegrams state that the police are out after the Juirindi Bank robbers, but up to the present have found no traces of the culprits. The barque Madras has arrived at Melbourne from Java. She caught fire off the Leuwdn, but it was extinguished without much difficulty. The authorities of the Agricultural College have determined to have a certain number of small birds shot each mouth in tbe year, and their crops examined, for toe purpose of publishing tbe results. A man named Thomas Guy was killed on the Ngapara railway on the 4th instant. He was lying across the rails, and the engine in passing nearly out him in two. At Invercargill, on the sth instant, the furniture works leased by Mr R. Greig, formerly of Dunedin, were totally destroyed by fire. At Napier, Heriona, tbe old Maori who was recently roasted to drive a devil out of him, died on the 4tb instant. His baker awaits trial at tbe next sitting of the Supreme Co«rt for assault

Relative to the cheque exchange question the Bank of New Zealand at Christchurch has intimated to its customers that they will not be charged exchange on any cheque passed to their account. John Muller, a Swiss, who arrived recently at Melbourne from New Zealand, committed suicide in the Melbourne Cemetery, the body, when found, was horribly gnawed by rats. Diptheria is very prevalent in some of the country districts of Tasmania, At Kentisbbury deaths have been so numerous that the Government have authorised a medical man to take charge of the district and report. It continues to spread according to latest advices. On tbe 6th instant, a whale was harpooned in Auckland Harbor by Captain Farquhar and a boat’s crew, hut got away with tbe harpoon and lino.

At Auckland, on the 7th instant, a man named Quartz, a Swede, was early on the morning of that day, found hanging to a lamp-post. He was quite dead when discovered. The rope was a new one. Two hotels at Christchurch (Morton’s and the White Hart) were raided by. the police on Saturday night the sth instant, and informations for gambling laid. In the Melbourne Legislative Assembly the Bill providing for the payment of members was read a second time on a division by 3S to 24. The measure provides that the payment of members shall not be limited to one session. Mr James Farmer has forwarded to the Auckland museum, from London, a case containing fifty different species of grasses suitable for arable land. A man named Concroft, the well-known bellman, was killed at Wellington on the Bth instant by a runaway horse.
