ALEXANDRA.
There is very little of interest to report respecting mining affairs. 1 hear that there is a prospect of a company being floated to work the Conroy’s reef, which should prove a good venture if the stone turns out anything like the ipiality of the lot lately crushed in Dunedin M'Kenzie and O '.’a dredge has been idle for some time, owing
to the high state of the Molynoux, which is up to the ordinary summer level, but is now gradually falling ; and as the weather appears to be getting settled the dredge may yet he able to make a good season’s work. It is reported that the party struck payable gold previous to the last rise in the river.
The Alexandra Committee for collecting subscriptions to the Irish Relief Fund have closed their lists, and have forwarded the balance of the money collected to the Central Committee in Dunedin. The total amount forwarded was LIOO Is Gd On the 21st inst. the Foresters’ Anniversary Ball took place in the Town Kail, and although through various reasons the attendance was not quite so large as on former occasions, yet about twenty-four couples took part in the mazy dance, and kept it up with spirit until 4 a.m. on the following morning, all present expressing themselves pleased with the arrangements, especially the refreshment department, contracted for by Mr Bell, of Clyde, and under the efficient management of Mr T. Webb, was everything that could bo desired.
Respecting Municipal affairs the Town Council are gradually getting into a bettor financial position, and consequently arc enabled to expend some money on works that were much wanted. A contract has been let to gravel a swampy portion of the main road near the Manse, and several other necessary repairs to the streets are to be carried out. Mr G. Ratcliffs’s tender for placing the ceiling on the Town Hall has been accepted; it is to ho of half-inch tongued and grooved timber, and when completed will greatly improve the acoustic properties of the building.
Constable M'Leod, our indefatigable officer in charge, who displayed such ability in the affair of the Bald Hill Flat robbery is about to place another feather in his cap I hear on good authority that he intends to effect a clever capture to-morrow, of a party on whom he has had his eye for a considerable time, but refrained from taking any steps against until he hod obtained sufficient evidence to secure a conviction. The manner in which the case has been got up reflects the greatest credit on the gallant constable, particularly as it is the first affair of the kind he has been engaged in. The well-known character of Mr M'Leod affords a guarantee that once taken into custody, there will be little chance of the prisoner escaping- Every one wishes that the sentence inflicted may be a long one.
