LONGWOOD NOTES.

Great disappointment (says the Western Star) was felt when it became known that the crushing expected from Printz’s claim on Wednesday or Thursday last would not take place for another week. The cause of the delay is owing to the machinery not being quite ready for milling. 'Wednesday or Thursday next is now named as the probable date for putting stone through, although some of the “knowing ones” doubt if crushing will bo commenced before ten days or a fortnight. Steam was got up for the first time on Wednesday last, when the machinery worked smoothly. It is estimated that there are 200 tons of stuff to grass in readiness to bo opoiated upon by the mill. ft was currently reported in town yesterday that further important discoveries had boon made in one of the drives in Prints’s claim. It is said in following a leader in one of the slopes the main reef was again sti uek, showing gold freely and widening out.

A large quantity of very promising stone has been put out of the Geelong claim this week, it is estimated that there will be sufficient stone from the two claims Priatz’s and Geelong, the shareholders in which are joint proprietors of the battery—to keep the stampers going for a month, by the time the machine is in working order. Several parties are on payable alluvial gold iu the neighbourhood of Gorge Crock, and a number of others are prospecting there.

The shareholders in St. George claim (Port’s line) have decided to take up an additional area of ground a 1 joining their present claim. They are taking steps to register the company under the Mining Companies .-Vet, anti men will be put on to work the ground in a few days. A forced sale by auction 500 shares in the Long wood Co.’s claim took place at Invercargill, on Tuesday. The prices realised by Mr Todd ranged from Gs 3d to Os I) I per share.

The Great Extended Co. have accepted a ten lor for a 3'JOft drive. The proprietors intend to throw tiro claim into a com-

It is expected that stone will he put through the Pioneer Battery on Monday or Tuesday- It has not transpired whether the proprietors intend to celebrate the occasion in the orthodox manner.

A very valuable discovery was made in the Balmoral claim on Thursday—second only in import ance to that in Prictz’s claim, if the reports which have reached us are correct, and wo have no reason to doubt the truth thereof, as we have received our information from a trustworthy source. A reef two feet wide was struck on the day named, which on being tested rivalled in richness the prospects from Printz's claim. It is not the same reef as Printz’s, but runs paraded to that one, at an obtuse angle, and judging from the direction of those two reefs, it is probable they will junction in the Duller or Australasian ground.

The Supriso Co, are sanguine as to having Port's lino of reef, as it can be traced to within a few feet of their claim, near the surface. They are about finishing a good hut close to the workings. The Duller Co. are getting well in with their tunnel, and there is indication of their being close to the reef.

The Fossickor Co. are pushing ahead in their now tunnel.

Wo bear Sloan’s (alluvial) party arc on good gold this week. The Hit or Miss, Daniels No. 1 and 2, are tunnelling and are making good progress, each being sanguine of proximity to the reef.
