There have heen terrific pales in all parts of Great Britain ami Ireland for the week ending December 31st. Dp to the 3rd January the Thames was shrouded in fog for 18 days. John Caloraft, who for 43 years acted as hangman at Newgate, died on December 13 f h. at the age of 79. He resigned his office in 1874 on account of advanced age, but the Corporation of the City of London continu'd his standing salary of a guinea a week up to the time of his death By an explosion in a gunmaker’s shop at Doncaster three persons were killed. Mr M‘Carthy, M.P. for Mallow, has resigned hia seat, because he has resolved to have no connection with Mr Parnell’s politics. and is disgusted by the bickerings in the Home Rule party. The people in the Gounty of Limerick clamour for bread. -Process serving is violently resisted in Galway and Mayo.—Serious collisions have taken place—Several Americans have been arrested, suspected of being Fenians in disguise. 'Hie Vienna Press is of opinion that a collision between Russia and England is inevitable. France intends to follow the example of Germany, by increasing the number of consuls. Mr Parnell’s reception at New V.irk was only moderate His mission was sharply criticised by the Press, The President of America has advocated depriving the Mormons of ad political rights. Timy are now negotiating for a home in Mexico. Correspondence has heen discovered proving an alliance between the German Socialists and the Russian Nihilists. Dr Kenealv is not in the T'chborne case, which is fixed for the middle of February Judas P Benjamin, Q. 0., Confederate Attorney General during the American civil war, is the leading counsel for the claimant. The M irk Lane Express states that the wheat crop of England is the worst of any season for the last ten years. Russia is nutting extreme pressure on Persia to induce the Shah to retire from his English alliance.
