from Edinburgh to Dundee, while crossing the bridge shortly afterwards, fell through the casing of the bridge into the river. An enormous loss of life ensued, although the exact particulars are not yet received. It is feared the loss of life will bo 200 persons drowned. Masses of the Afghans, estimated at 20,000, tried to storm the entrenchments, but after two days’ fightmg they retreated to the hills, the cavalry pursuing, which created a panic.

General Roberts re-occupied Bala-Hissar without resistance, removing large quantities of gunpowder from the city. The Afghan loss is enormous.
