CLYDE V. CROMWELL. The opening match of the season was played on the Clyde ground on Saturday last, between elevens of the above Clubs. Both teams were punctually on the ground, and about half past 11 the game began. Mr Stevens, who has gone to a great deal of trouble in preparing the new ground, is deserving of great praise for the state in which he had it, the visitors especially being loud m their praises of it. The day was not favourable, the wind blowing very heavily from the north-west, and rendering bowling against it almost impossible. Clyde won the toss and took the field, Claik bowling with the wind and Aris against it. Nothing of importance occurred in Cromwell’s first innings, Blood (il) being the only one to score double figures. J’he innings closed for 51. Clyde immediately followed, Maddock (with the wind) anil Muter bowling. In this innings the wickets fell even quicker than in the preceding one, Stevens (with 11) being the top scorer, and the tenth wicket fell for 43, or fifteen runs to the bad. After a short interval Cromwell again assumed the defensive, Clark and M’Connochie bowling. The first four wickets soon succumbed, but Blood and Maddock getting together soon gave the field their fill of leather-hunting. Blood was the first to retire, having scored 26 rapidly and by careful play He was followed by Hogan, who knocked together 17 before be retired. Howell then joined Maddock, and still runs came rapidly, but their partnership did not last long, Maddock being bowled shortly after for 35, the top score in the match Howell ran up 27 very quickly, and none of the remainder making a stand he carried out his bat. The total for this innings was 134, leaving Clyde the mo lest sura of 150 to get to win. Cromwell immediately took the field, and Clyde’s second innings commenced. As in the first Stevens was the only one who cbntributed double figures (10). The bowling again proved too good, and the wickets fell in rapid succession, the innings closing for 37. Cromwell thus won the match by 112 runs. The fielding of the visitors was far above that of the Clyde team, the longstopping on both sides being very good, especially that of Cromwell. The Clyde fielding was very loose several easy catches being missed, and at the time when the two highest scorers had not scored six each. The match was over by 5.30 Three cheers were given by both teams and responded to, and the players returned to town. The following are the scores CROMWELL —lst INNINGS.
