TEMPERANCE MEETING. A public meeting, convened by advertisement, was held in the Town Hal l , Clyde, on Friday evening last, the 2Gth September. A large number of brothers and sisters of the Order, including representatives of the Ida Valley, Ophir, and Alexandra Lodges, were present, of whom the Rev. J Lothian (Alexandra Lodge) was vo’ed to the chair. The Rev. T. E. Ash and District Deputy Bro Beattie also occupied seats on the platform.

The rev. gentleman in opening the meeting said it was not intended to give long addresses, as the ostensible object of the meeting—the instituting a Badge in Clyde would fnl y occupy the evening. He then read an extract from the constitution of the Order as illustrating the basis of the Order ; also the declaration required to lie made by entrants. He then gave a brief address on the objects of the Order, succinctly and distinctly pointing out the benefits, and exposing the many false charges that are laid against it.

_ The Rev. Mr Ash followed, and expressively dilated on the beauties of the Order. He said its enem cs charged them with intemperance. To the impeachment he pleaded guilty, and after describing Hie many scenes of wretchedness he had witnessed when curate of a parish in the E ist End of London, women and children positively starving foi the want of the common necessaries of life through the money being spent in public houses, ho asked who, after having had such experiences, could ho other than intemperate in their dealing with the question. He said by means of the or ler hundreds of happy homes had been made ; thousands of their fellows had been redeemed when on the brink of ruin,

and as the Order increased still more would he saved. The rev. gentleman on taking his seat was warmly applauded. The Chairman having again road the declaration, the meeting closed, when those outside the Order retired.

The Lo ige was then formally opened by D.D.6.W.C.T. Bro. Beattie, and the following W. V.T., Sis. Brotherston ;W. 0., Bro. Lothian ; P W.C.T., Bro. Ritchie ; W.IS., Bro. Aldred ; W T., Bro. Murray ; W.F.S., Bro. Simpson; W M., Bro M‘Donald ; W.J G,, Bro. Lett; W.O.G, Bro. Hansen ; W.A.S., Bro. Wm. Thomson ; W.D.M., Bro, Dewar; R.H.S., Sis. Colliding; L H.D., Sis. Thomson; and Bros, Jas. M ‘Connoehie, Lindsay, Davidson, Ash, Sims Jno. Crawford, and Sis. Ash. The W. M. reported eight brothers and three sisters in waiting to join the Lodge. The following were then duly initiated : —Bros. W Allen, Thos. Crawford, Wm Brown, Robert Watson, John Smart, David M‘Ferran, Win. Williams, W. B. Young, and S's C. Hastie, G, Charnock, and Mary Ann Rees Williams. It was resolved that the Lodge be called “ The Dnnstan Lodge.” Bro. Beattie said he would recommend Brn. \ah as D. O.W.C.T. The following are the names of the other officers elected : W.C.T., Bro. John Crawford ; W.V.T., Bro Sims ; W.S., Bro. John Smart; W.F.S., Rro M‘Ferr.au ; W.T., Bro. Thos. Crawford ; W.C., Bro. Ash ; W.M, Bro, Watson ; W.J.G., Bro. Allen; W.0.G., Brn Davidson; P.WCT., Cro. W. B. Young; W.0.M., Bro. Brown ; R H.S., Sis. Hastie;L HS„ Sis. Williams; W.A.S., Sis. Charnock. The a'mve officers were then duly installed by the Lodge. Resolved —That the Lodge meet on alternate Saturday nights with the Golden Stream Lodge, the next meeting to ho held on October 11th. A cordial vote of thanks was accorded f o the Lodge Deputy and friends for their attendance, which was suitably acknowledged. The Lodge then broke up.
